From Risk Appetite to Controlled Chaos
Life Lessons and Gym Chats
"Straight Facts" was a YouTube title I started with big dreams and high hopes. It was meant to be a video series where I could share insights, truths, and lessons in an unfiltered, relatable way. But like many dreams, life got in the way, and the series only ever saw one video. Now, almost six years later, I’m picking up where I left off. Here’s to reigniting the spark and continuing the journey I started all those years ago.
Have you ever wondered why life seems to shift after 25? In a recent gym session-turned-philosophical discussion, Samuel and I explored topics ranging from maturity and decision-making to discipline and gym culture, all while squeezing in a few sets.
Here's what we unpacked:
1. Life After 25: Why It’s a Game-Changer
Your brain’s development at 25 plays a huge role in how you approach life. It’s not just about maturity—it’s about risk. As your risk appetite lowers, you start making choices with a long-term focus. Think of it like sharing a meal with friends versus indulging solo: the former builds trust, connection, and future rewards.
2. The Joy of Discipline
There are two types of “good” in life: the quick fix of a dopamine hit (like scrolling your phone) versus the satisfaction of a solid meal, a workout, or a productive day. The latter is a quieter reward but one that pays dividends. Discipline isn’t just about restriction—it’s about freedom in the long term.
3. Controlled Chaos vs. True Peace
Managing chaos in your business or goals is one thing, but letting that same chaos bleed into relationships or friendships? That’s a recipe for burnout. The takeaway? Learn to compartmentalise chaos and prioritise peace where it matters.
4. Parenting Lessons Without Being a Parent
Even if you’re not a parent, the wisdom behind letting kids experience failure rings true for everyone. Mistakes teach resilience, much like a puddle teaches a kid what happens when they jump in it. Protecting yourself (or others) from failure might feel right in the moment, but it robs you of the chance to learn and grow.
5. Gym Hygiene and Social Etiquette
Let’s talk about the unspoken rules of gym culture: hygiene. It’s surprising how many people overlook this. Two deodorants and a washing machine aren’t luxuries—they’re necessities. Smelling good is self-respect, plain and simple.
6. "Full Yap Day": A Gym Session in Disguise
This wasn’t just a workout—it was a "Full Yap Day," filled with laughter, insights, and just enough movement to call it a gym session. The session ended with the realization that sometimes the best gains come from conversations, not just weights.
Final Thoughts
Life is full of lessons if you’re willing to listen and reflect. Whether it’s about making better choices, valuing peace, or just being mindful of your presence in shared spaces, growth is all about the small steps. Stay tuned for more sessions where gym time meets life’s big questions!
